What To Expect!
This page helps explain the procedure, how to prepare for your appointment, Aftercare and frequency asked questions!
Appointment preparation
Before your visit, simple preparation helps make the process quicker and more comfortable:
-
Apply olive oil drops to the affected ear(s) at least 4 days before your appointment. This softens the wax for easier removal.
-
Continue using the drops right up to the morning of your appointment if possible.
-
Avoid using cotton buds or any objects in your ears — they can push wax deeper or cause irritation.
-
If you have any ear pain, infection, or recent surgery, please mention it when booking.
Tips: Good preparation often means we can complete the removal in one visit.
Olive oil drops are not always necessary! Please contact me for further advice if you are unsure.

Step-by-Step: What Happens on the Day:
Your appointment is designed to be relaxed, professional, and one-to-one. Most appointments last 20–40 minutes total.
-
Welcome & Consultation I’ll greet you (or arrive at your home), review your symptoms and medical history, and answer any questions. Your comfort is my priority.
-
Examination Using a bright light and endoscope (tiny camera), I’ll carefully examine your ear canal and show you the wax buildup on a screen if you’d like to see it.
-
Wax Removal I use either endoscopic microsuction or water irrigation, chosen based on your ear and preference:
-
The process is gentle and usually painless.
-
You may hear some noise (especially with suction), but many people find it surprisingly quick and relieving.
-
-
Final Check I’ll re-examine your ears to ensure they’re clear and give you aftercare advice.
You’ll leave with clearer hearing and an emailed report with simple instructions to keep your ears healthy.
Any concerns witnessed during or following the procedure will be documented on your tailored report and discussed during the appointment.
Microsuction vs Water Irrigation
Endoscopic Microsuction (Often recommended)
-
Uses gentle suction under direct camera vision
-
Very precise and safe
-
Minimal water involved
-
Ideal for most people, including those with narrow canals or past irrigation issues
-
Quick and dry procedure
Water Irrigation (Syringing)
-
Gentle warm water flushes softened wax out
-
Effective traditional method
-
Comfortable when wax is well-softened
-
Good alternative when suitable
I’ll discuss the best option for you during your consultation.

Aftercare
-
Keep your ears dry for 24–48 hours (use earplugs or a shower cap when washing hair).
-
Avoid inserting anything into your ears (no cotton buds).
-
You may notice temporary crackling, fullness, or extra sensitivity as your ears adjust — this usually settles quickly.
-
If you experience pain, discharge, dizziness, or no improvement in hearing, contact me straight away.
-
For ongoing ear health, we can discuss maintenance options if needed.
